Who is the best scorer in the NBA?

Updated: Sep 10, 2018

A question with seemingly no definitive answer, who puts the ball in the bucket the best? Well I will try to give my perspective on who I believe is the best scorer in the NBA along with some honorable mentions. Firstly to qualify for this honour I have set some criteria. Players need to have at least 1 scoring championship and at least 10 40 point games in the last 3 regular seasons. I feel that this is a fair set of rules as it allows a large timescale along with a season where the players were in their scoring prime. The 7 names that met the scoring champ criteria were LeBron James, Kevin Durant, James Harden, Steph Curry, Russell Westbrook, Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony, so next I had to look at their high scoring games over the last 3 seasons.

This led me to eliminate Dwyane Wade (0 games) and Carmelo Anthony (1) for their lack of high scoring games but as they are in the twilight of their careers it is understandable. Surprisingly, the widely renowned 2 greatest current players also did not make the cut. LeBron has 3 40 point games whereas Kevin Durant had 7. There are a number of reasons as to why this comes as a surprise, firstly LeBrons playoff scoring makes up for his regular season but for the purposes of this article I wont include him. The fact he controls the game and has the ball in his hands led to me think he would have a lot more 40 point games in the last 3 seasons but as we know LeBron isn't a pure scorer. The biggest surprise though was KD, only 7 40 point games in the last 3 regular seasons (shocked face). I mean he has had 2 great scoring point guards that potentially have limited his ability to score the ball at such a high rate and the two point guards in question have scored the ball better without him as a teammate which makes this a legit argument.

And then there were 3! The 3 best scorers in the league are all ball handling point guards in a league where wing players dominate. I'm sure I don't need to name the 3 eligible players but just incase you forgot, we have James Harden, Stephen Curry and Russell Westbrook.

With 33 (yes! THIRTY THREE) 40 point games in the last 3 seasons we have James Harden followed by Russell Westbrook (25) and Stephen Curry (21). If we want to crank these numbers up even more, Harden has the only 60 point game out of the 3 and leads Westbrook (4) and Curry (3) with 6 50 point games.

For me, Harden is the most gifted offensive player in the game today along with having the most complete scoring package. On any given night Harden is the only player capable of hitting 8 3's, 10+ free throws while having double digit assists. Congrats James.
